Why Organic Cotton Gets Softer With Every Wash

Passion Lilie clothes and a sprig of cotton

My favorite Passion Lilie dress is one that came out three seasons ago. It’s green (my favorite), a perfect length for chasing kids around, and above all, it feels like my favorite t-shirt.

Three years in, this dress looks just like the day I brought it home. The colors are rich, the silhouette hasn’t stretched (or shrunk). The softness though – that’s the story of these last three years of wear, wash, repeat. This dress is cozy enough to sleep in, roll out of bed, and hit the ground running. Truly, a fait accompli.

I started to wonder, why does organic cotton seem to get better with age? We often talk about the environmental benefits of organic cotton – no pesticides or harmful chemicals, safer on skin and for the people who make it – but as quality goes, why does my organic cotton dress seem so much more soft and durable than my other clothes? I set out to find some answers.

Why Organic Cotton Gets Softer Over Time

Like all cotton, organic cotton is made from natural plant fibers. These fibers are breathable, flexible, and surprisingly durable. When a cotton fabric is first woven into clothing, the fibers can feel a little crisp. But unlike many synthetic materials, cotton fibers relax with use instead of breaking down.

During the first few washes, water and detergent penetrate the cotton weave, loosening the fibers. Almost magically, this has the effect of reducing stiffness while maintaining the integrity of the garment. When organic cotton clothes are washed, the fibers gently relax and release tension, giving it the softness we love.

Gentle friction from being washed with other clothes offers a slight buffing of the fibers, making the fabric feel smoother. It gives your clothes the softness of a well-loved t-shirt even while maintaining the silhouette and colors.

Organic cotton fibers are also highly absorbent. As the fibers relax and open up, they become even better at managing moisture and allowing airflow. This is one of the many reasons we love organic cotton – there’s no better fabric for keeping you fresh and cool on hot summer days. As a New Orleans clothing brand, we can confirm: when it’s 100 degrees and walking outside feels like swimming in soup, breathable clothing is mission critical.

Softness ≠ Weakness

Normally, when something gets softer, we assume it’s wearing out. I think that’s what has surprised me the most! After all these years of wear, I keep expecting my favorite dress to lose its shape, stretch, or start to pill. Instead, it keeps getting more comfortable while maintaining its shape and colors.

Part of the reason is that organic cotton fibers remain closer to their natural state. The harsh pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, and chemical finishes used on conventional crops (i.e. not organic) strip and weaken the natural plant fibers. Organic cotton fibers remain completely intact, healthy, and resilient, so they can relax without breaking down over time.

A closet full of clothes

Organic Cotton vs. Polyester

Looking through my closet, I’ve realized that the clothes I’ve owned the longest and still genuinely reach for are almost always made from natural fibers. The pieces that have pilled beyond recognition or lost their shape are almost 100% fast fashion synthetic outfits. I started to wonder why!

My biggest takeaway is that organic cotton and polyester fibers age very differently. Organic cotton is a natural fiber. With wash and wear, the fibers soften and become more comfortable while maintaining their strength.

Polyester, on the other hand, is a plastic-based fiber. It might be durable in some cases, but it doesn’t evolve in the same way that cotton does. Polyester fabrics tend to roughen with time, trap odors, pill, and lose their shape after repeated wear.

Think about your favorite old college sweatshirt, your favorite t-shirt, or the dress you always throw in your suitcase. Chances are, it’s made from cotton.

Why Passion Lilie Chooses Organic Cotton

At Passion Lilie, we’ve gradually transitioned our collections to 100% organic cotton for a few reasons. First, we believe in creating beautiful clothes that do not harm people or the planet. Fibers grown without fertilizers or pesticides are healthier for everyone in our supply chain, from farmer to customer.

Second, we want our dresses, tops, and pants to become your favorite pieces in your closet for years and years. We hope they’ll show up in memories of the important times in your life – vacations, school performances, dinners with friends.

Our favorite thing is when someone walks into the shop wearing a Passion Lilie piece from years ago. Those are clothes that tell the stories of our lives.

How to care for Organic Cotton Clothing

One great thing about buying durable clothes is that you don’t have to do it often. You can buy high quality, organic clothing to enjoy for years instead of continuing to replace pieces in your closet. With proper care – gentle washing, mild detergents, and low-heat drying – your organic cotton clothes can get better with every wear.

To help make your organic cotton clothes as soft as possible, here are a few easy tips.

  1. Wash before your first wear to relax the fibers
  2. Use mild detergent and avoid harsh chemicals
  3. Avoid fabric softeners, which can coat fibers and reduce breathability
  4. Dry on low heat or line dry to prevent shrinking
